Probiotic
Live "good" bacteria in fermented foods and some supplements.
Concepts
Definition
Probiotics are live microorganisms — mostly bacteria — that may benefit health when eaten in adequate amounts. They occur naturally in fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi, and are sold as supplements. Evidence is strongest for specific strains in specific situations, such as easing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, and weaker for broad "gut health" claims. Because effects are strain-specific, one product's results do not transfer to another. Fibre-rich foods that feed existing gut bacteria (prebiotics) matter too.
Related terms

Micronutrient
