Electrolyte
Minerals like sodium and potassium that carry the body's electrical signals.
Minerals
Definition
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge in body fluids — chiefly sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium. They control fluid balance, muscle contraction and nerve signalling. A normal diet keeps them in range for most people. Heavy, prolonged sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea can deplete them, which is when an electrolyte drink or oral rehydration solution helps; for ordinary exercise, water and regular food are usually enough.
Related terms
Sodium
The mineral in salt; most people eat more than the recommended limit.
Hydration
Keeping enough body water; thirst and urine colour are good everyday guides.
Micronutrient
Vitamins and minerals the body needs in tiny amounts to function.
