Resting heart rate

Beats per minute at rest; a lower rate often signals better fitness.

Measures

Definition

Resting heart rate is how many times the heart beats per minute when you are calm and still. For adults, 60–100 beats per minute is the normal range, and a lower figure often reflects a fitter, more efficient heart. Measure it before rising or after sitting quietly. Caffeine, stress, heat and illness raise it temporarily. A persistently high resting rate, or a low one with dizziness, is worth discussing with a doctor.
