Macronutrient
The three nutrients the body needs in large amounts: protein, carbohydrate and fat.
Concepts
Definition
Macronutrients are the nutrients the body needs in gram quantities and that supply energy: protein, carbohydrate and fat. (Water and, for some, alcohol are sometimes grouped here too.) Balancing them — enough protein to maintain muscle, quality carbohydrate for energy and fibre, and healthy fats — matters more for most people than chasing one perfect ratio. Vitamins and minerals, needed in tiny amounts, are the micronutrients.
Related terms
Protein
A macronutrient built from amino acids that repairs and builds tissue.
Carbohydrate
The body's main quick energy source, from sugars, starches and fibre.
Micronutrient
